Before his Oscar winning/nominated work in the 90s with The Silence of the Lambs and Philadelphia, Jonathan Demme was mostly known for crafting humanist comedy dramas/capers. His underrated 1986 film Something Wild was one of them and will kick our evening off. Seemingly ordinary, married and uptight banker Charles Driggs (Jeff Daniels) is whisked away by the more free spirited Lulu (Melanie Griffith) for a chaotic and offbeat weekend trip to her old childhood town. What starts off as a mad cap romantic road trip comedy, soon takes an unexpected and deadly turn once Lulu’s unhinged convict ex husband Ray (a break out role for Ray Liotta) enters the picture.
The next film of the night is David Lynch’s seminal psychological neo noir masterpiece Blue Velvet. Kyle MacLachlan stars as college student Jeffrey Beaumont, who after discovering a severed ear in a field, leads the young man on an investigation with his friend Sandy Williams (Laura Dern), a local detective’s daughter. They soon find the ear is mysteriously linked to a beautiful elusive nightclub singer (Isabella Rossellini) and a group of criminals who have kidnapped her child, led by the psychotically disturbed Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper).
There will be a 30 minute break between both films.
