Coinciding with Noirvember, we’ll be screening two great 90s neo noir films, both set in the classic Hollywood period, one lesser known and one more renowned.
The first film is cult classic Devil in a Bless Dress, from director/writer Carl Franklin, whose other works include One False Move (1992), Out of Time (2003), and more recently directed a few episodes in season 2 of Mindhunter. Based on the first book in a series of novels by Walter Mosley, the film follows Easy Rawlins (Denzel Washington), an unemployed black World War II veteran, who meets DeWitt Albright (Tom Sizemore), a mysterious white man, at a bar. Albright is looking for someone to investigate the disappearance of a missing white woman named Daphne Monet (Jennifer Beals), who he believes is hiding out in one of the city’s black jazz clubs. Struggling to keep a roof over his head and strapped for cash, Rawlins decides to take the job. Though he soon realises that he is way in over his head. The movie also features a breakout performance from Don Cheadle as Rawlins’ wild card friend Mouse.
Closing out the night is the Academy award winning L.A. Confidential, directed and co-written by Curtis Hanson. It features an all star cast including Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, Kim Basinger (who won an Oscar for Supporting Actress), James Cromwell, and Danny DeVito. Three detectives in the corrupt and antagonistic LA police department of the 1950s use differing methods to uncover a conspiracy behind the shotgun slayings of the patrons at an all-night diner.
There will be a 15 minute break between both films.
